Peay Vineyards are pioneers. In 1998, Peay planted the first substantial vineyard in the now-recognized Annapolis area within the newly designated West Sonoma Coast AVA. The area they pioneered 25 years ago offers distinctive qualities shown transparently in their wines.
Further ahead of the curve, when the young Peay brothers, Andy and Nick, decided they wanted to plant a vineyard and make wine, neither wanted to make the sort of powerfully fruity, sometimes overripe, high-alcohol California wines that were increasingly in vogue in the late 1990s. Nick theorized that if they could find a place that didn’t struggle against the California sun, they could make wines that were both fruity and had notable aromatics.
At first, they didn’t want critics tasting their wines because they knew their palates wouldn’t align. Instead, the brothers visited sommeliers in Bay Area restaurants who were then largely avoiding California wines because they were too heavy and high in alcohol to go with their menus.
Over the last few decades, the stylistic pendulum of California winemaking has swung in Peay’s direction. Tastes are far more diverse, and the Sonoma Coast has come to be known as a source for fresh, balanced wines.
This walk-around tasting on Friday, September 15, 2023, is your chance to taste the ENTIRE Peay Vineyards portfolio alongside special guest Andy Peay! He’ll be on hand to present the wines from the cellar of Pam & Steve Taylor. Of course, there will be excellent food pairings from 360 Bistro to round out the exciting evening of Sonoma wines.
