Take Home the Elusive Marcassin Marcassin

If you’ve attended our tastings and dinners in the past, you may have had the opportunity to taste a sip or two of Marcassin. Rarely, though, do we have a quantity of bottles in our auction as they are so highly valued by collectors and hard to come by. That’s how you know this lot is special. Marcassin is among California’s most highly acclaimed and is an intimidatingly rare treasure.

For those unfamiliar with Marcassin, we’ll begin your discovery by studying the great Helen Turley. Peter Michael, Colgin, Bryant Family, Pahlmeyer—these are just some of the labels that she put on the map. Brilliant, stubborn, indefatigable, she’s had a huge impact on California wine.

Turley grew up in Georgia, in a family that didn’t drink, then fell in love with wine while living in New York. In 1968, she and husband John Wetlaufer moved to California. After working in wine labs and cellars, she struck out on her own in 1991 and built a reputation for elevating promising wineries to the next level.

She earned a reputation for being difficult, putting the wine first and criticizing clients she thought did not. Though most of her top clients produced Cabernet, Turley, and Wetlaufer focused on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at their own Marcassin estate.

The rich, opulent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay crafted at Marcassin is minimally produced and very hard to get a hold of. Turley’s personal production philosophy shapes her winemaking process to be focused on quality and excellence always calling for, “great vineyards, meticulously farmed, limited yield, long hang time, and natural yeast.” The 20-acre estate vineyard on the Sonoma Coast produces only 100 barrels annually. None of the wines interact with fining, filtering, or cold stabilization and are routinely aged for five years before they’re released.

If you pride yourself on having the best of the best in your cellar, then this lot of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their Marcassin Estate and Three Sisters Vineyard should be at the forefront of your priorities tonight. Trust us, Marcassin bottles don’t come around very often!
