Tucked between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in the heart of California’s most vibrant and picturesque landscape, Santa Barbara has earned the moniker of the American Riviera. The region’s Mediterranean climate, with its fertile valleys and deep historical roots, combined with the growing food and beverage scene of the Funk Zone and Urban Wine Trail, make Santa Barbara the quintessential California destination.

Here is a sample of how this itinerary could unfold:

Day 1 – Friday

Hotel Californian

Travel to Santa Barbara and get settled in your accommodations. Your first two nights will be spent at the Hotel Californian. Set next to the Pacific Ocean in the shadows of the Santa Ynez Mountains and in the bustling downtown center of Santa Barbara, Hotel Californian continues to redefine luxury in the celebrated American Riviera. As Santa Barbara’s premier urban destination, the hotel is a magnet for the Hollywood elite, international visitors, and locals alike. Featuring dazzling spaces from celebrity designers, the iconoclastic enclave – part history, part imagination, and all Californian – continues to drive the revitalization of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone while upending conventional expectations.

Day 2 – Saturday

This morning you’ll head downtown for a tasting with Melville Winery. Melville places great importance on being an “estate” winery, meaning they work exclusively with fruit from the Vineyards they own and tend themselves. Taste their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah (all organically grown at their Sta. Rita Hills estate) in the vibrant “Funk Zone” neighborhood of downtown Santa Barbara.

Au Bon Climat’s Tasting Room

Your next stop is at the tasting room of a Nashville Wine Auction legend, Au Bon Climat. The tasting room, located in the historic Presidio neighborhood of downtown Santa Barbara, features both current releases and library wines of Au Bon Climat, Clendenen Family Vineyards, and Jim Clendenen’s other creative wine endeavors. While ABC’s focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they have wines crafted from over 16 other grape varieties. The quality and vast selection of wines available are unmatched in Santa Barbara.

How you spend the rest of your day in Santa Barbara is up to you, but you have one more item on the itinerary. Highlighted by the Michelin Guide, Bettina is a cozy neighborhood restaurant honoring the convivial roots of Italian culture and food, while being inspired by the abundant produce and coastal vibes of southern California. Specializing in naturally leavened, wood fired pizzas and simple dishes influenced by the owner’s travels to Italy, Bettina is the perfect spot for you to enjoy either lunch or a casual dinner.

Day 3 – Sunday

Available only on a Sunday, you’ll love today’s Champagne Brunch. Set inside a 19th century citrus packing house on the grounds of the storied San Ysidro Ranch, the Stonehouse Restaurant, recently named the #1 Restaurant in Santa Barbara by OpenTable exudes the rustic romance of its historic setting. Savor contemporary American cuisine that is artfully prepared using fresh, local ingredients that highlight the seasonal bounty of Santa Barbara and California’s Central Coast. Since 2014, the Stonehouse Restaurant has been the proud recipient of Wine Spectator’s highest honor, the Grand Award. This prestigious distinction, bestowed on only 97 restaurants worldwide, recognizes “extraordinary commitment to wine service.”

Santa Ynez Valley

Travel to Los Olivos after brunch for a couple of tastings. Your first stop is Stolpman Vineyards. Over 20 years ago, Founding Partner, Tom Stolpman, discovered what he believed to be one of the greatest viticultural sites on earth. Hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast, on a rare Limestone outcropping and unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind, the unique land is naturally suited to grow Syrah and Roussanne grapes. Visit their patio to taste their estate grown classics.

Established by the late Fess Parker (aka Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett) in 1989, the family owned and operated Fess Parker Winery has built a reputation for crafting exceptional Rhône and Burgundian wines from Santa Barbara County. Since the opening of its expansive tasting room and winery along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, Fess Parker Winery has remained a top destination in the Santa Ynez Valley. Now three generations in, the Fess Parker Family is proud to carry on Fess’s legacy of wine heritage and hospitality by welcoming guests to for wine tastings at the estate.

Tonight, shift your accommodations to The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern of the Auberge Resorts Collection. From its earliest incarnation, in 1886 as a popular stagecoach stop to its years as a surreptitious hangout through Prohibition, The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern has long held a fabled place in Central Coast lore. Revered and raucously enjoyed for generations, the beloved landmark opens a new chapter as the definitive luxury destination in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Day 4 – Monday

Today you’ll taste in Lompoc! First, visit the cellar with Sandhi Wines. The Sandhi Cellar Experience offers a unique opportunity to set foot in the winemaking epicenter and preview current and future vintages from both bottle and barrel or tank. The in-depth tasting displays the full breadth and beauty of Santa Barbara County terroir and some of the very best Pinot Noirs and single-vineyard Chardonnays in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Starting their winemaking journey in a West Hollywood apartment on Sweetzer Avenue, Lisa and Michael have come a long way (and even moved into legal winemaking space!). Taste their Pinot Noir, Grenache, Chardonnay, and more at the Sweetzer Cellars tasting lounge in Lompoc.

Mattei’s Tavern

Return to your hotel and freshen up for dinner, right in the hotel! Tonight, you have a $1,000 gift card to spend at Mattei’s Tavern. The Tavern is a California ranch-inspired restaurant spotlighting flavorful dishes and honest ingredients, many of which are harvested from Mattei’s on-site garden and surrounding local farms. Paying homage to its century old roots, the menu is elevated yet unfussy, offering grilled dishes and vegetables alongside seasonal specialties. The exceptional wine program is a singular and definitive draw of The Tavern. Have your choice of the three-course pre-fixed menu or choose from their enticing menu.
