The creation of Super Tuscan wines resulted from the frustration winemakers had towards a slow bureaucracy in changing Italy’s wine law during the 1970s. Winemakers began mixing ‘unsanctioned’ wine varieties (like Merlot) into their blends to make high-quality wines. The legal system eventually yielded in 1992 with the creation of the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), a new designation that gave winemakers the ability to be more creative but still ensure a higher quality of wine. And boy, are we thankful they persisted in their drives for creativity!
This “Chairings” Super Tuscan fête is hosted by none other than this year’s Pairings Co-Chairs. You’ll convene at the home of Rachel and Jeff Mitchell and drink wines from the cellar of Gabriela Lira and Jonas Sjögren. The 20-year-old lineup of 2004 Super Tuscan royalty even includes the OG Super Tuscan, Tignanello.
Spend your evening on Saturday, April 13, “Under the Tuscan Sun” with your Pairings Co-Chairs, sipping on Marvelous Tuscans while Chef Tony Galzin, a Nashville Wine Auction favorite from Nicky’s Coal Fired, whips up the perfect food accompaniment.
Only eight lucky winners will get to attend, so raise your paddle high in one hand and show us the number of spots you want with the other. And keep ‘em up as long as you can!
